4 Alternative Destinations To Visit Outside Seoul (Part 1)

You can read Part 2 here.

Everyone who seems to go to Seoul takes a side trip to the DMZ. But if you're looking for a few other places to visit for a day or two a little ways away from South Korea's capital, here are a few destinations you might want to consider.

1. YongPyong Ski Resort

Snow to someone who lives in a tropical country is a rare and often cherished occurrence. The first time I experienced snow in my entire life was in Seoul on my visit in 2010 - we had woken up to a night of red-eye flights and partying to find it was snowing outside. The next day, I experienced even more snow as we spent 1 night and 2 days in YongPyong Ski Resort.

Located approximately 200 km from Seoul, it only takes about 2-3 hours to get to YongPyong Ski Resort, which makes it an ideal side trip if you're ever visiting the capital. Shuttle buses travel from Seoul to the resort and back on a daily basis, so you don't have to worry about transportation.

At the resort, you can take a cable car to Dragon Peak at the top of Mt. Balwang, take the Winter Sonata (a popular Korean drama) tour, or take skiing and snowboarding lessons!

So much snow!

Who did it better, Korean Drama-style. My friends acting out a scene from "Winter Sonata", a popular drama that shot some scenes in YongPyong Ski Resort.

Camwhoring in Dragon Peak: because a girl from the tropics doesn't come by snow everyday!

We took skiing lessons, which were incredibly fun! Well, it wasn't that fun for everyone, I guess. ^ ^

2. Jukjeon Cafe Street

It's only a train ride away from the hustle and bustle of Seoul, making it a perfect destination if you'd like to just spend a cozy afternoon reading a book or enjoying a cup of coffee and some waffles with ice cream.

You can also go cafe hopping as we did, strolling along the cafe-lined streets and admiring the pretty buildings and storefronts, and stopping by a few to try their dishes.
