The Sights and Sounds of Hongdae, Part 2: The Hongdae Free Market

I absolutely love the youthful and creative vibe of Hongdae, and could probably spend an entire trip to Seoul just cafe hopping and people watching. While we had a pretty hectic itinerary on our trip to Korea last year, we did manage to squeeze in some time to visit the Hongdae Free Market on a pretty autumn Saturday afternoon. On Saturdays between March and November, the park right in front of Hongik University becomes Hongdae Free Market, where artists set up booths to sell their items - from cute headbands, hand-dyed stockings, stationery to portraits and other works of art. Think Etsy come to life. The place was packed when we went, with many locals and tourists looking through the artists' wares, and a performance happening in one part of the park. It was in the Hongdae Free Market that I chanced upon Qqoogo, the artist I featured in an earlier post.

More pictures (and some songs, as usual) under the cut! If you ever visit the Hongdae Free Market, what kind of items would you shop for?

Stalls outside of the Free Market. I can't be sure, but unlike the Free Market, I think they're open on most days.

The Hongdae Free Market is a great place to get inspiration - I wanna try my hand at making these headbands for myself!

I think she was drawing a portrait of him on the glass. A lot of people were standing around and watching this, so I got curious and took a photo.

I'm not sure what these are for exactly- a place to put your pins and needles in? Or are they purely decorative? - but they are just so adorable! I should've bought a few.

We heard these two songs a lot when we were in Seoul. Enjoy!

Directions to Hongdae Free Market (from Oh Happy Dae, who also has a map on her post):
Go out exit 9 and walk straight until the 1st intersection. Turn left and walk straight up the hill towards Hongik University. When you get to the end, right in front of the uni, turn right. The park is just around the corner on the right side. You can walk up some stairs or take the side street.

Looks like a fun place. I like markets because you get to see local merchandise. :)

Exactly! Lots of one-of-a-kind pieces in markets. The only downside? We couldn't haggle so much, knowing the people who were selling the goods were the exact same people who put their creativity, time and effort into making them. I would've wanted to buy more stuff, but I simply didn't have the funds!

Thanks for visiting! :)
